How to Care for Your Silk Sarees

A careful storage routine for treasured silk sarees: clean before storing, protect from light and damp, support folds and inspect the textile periodically.

Before storage

Start clean, dry and fully aired

Follow the maker’s care label and use a textile-care professional for stains, complex zari or fragile heirloom pieces. Do not store a saree while it is damp or carrying perfume, food residue or visible soil.

Keep silk away from direct light during storage. Light exposure can weaken and fade natural fibers over time.

  • Let the saree air in shade after wear before storing it.
  • Avoid spraying perfume directly onto silk or zari.
  • Seek professional advice before treating an old, weighted or damaged silk.

Long-term storage

Support the folds and allow the textile to breathe

Store the saree flat when practical, or pad folds with clean undyed cotton muslin or neutral, unbuffered acid-free tissue. Avoid direct contact with ordinary paper, bare wood and sealed plastic.

Inspect stored sarees periodically and change the fold lines so the same fibers are not held under repeated stress. Keep the storage area clean, cool, dry and dark.

Preservation is a gentle routine

The goal is not constant handling; it is clean storage, stable conditions and occasional inspection. For valuable or fragile heirlooms, consult a qualified textile conservator.
